Weight Loss Coaching Success Story: Becky 52 Pounds Weight Loss
Just three weeks into our work together, Becky shared with me that she was going to have to have foot surgery and would have to be in a boot and stay away from weight bearing exercise for three months. I asked her if she wanted to hold up and start her weight loss journey once she was healed, but Becky said “no, I’m ready and want to do this now.” Becky ultimately still lost 15 pounds those first three months by controlling what she could, which was her food intake, and we got creative with exercise around her injury. Having this early weight loss success despite the deck being stacked against her, gave her the confidence she needed to keep it going even when once again she faced being limited with exercise through two more subsequent surgeries.
It’s this kind of perseverance and dedication to losing the weight and getting healthy for good, despite the obstacles that life throws in her way, that has led to Becky losing 52 pounds so far and being well below 200 pounds for the first time since the 90’s!
Like many of my clients, Becky came to me as someone with emotional eating challenges who regularly turned to food for comfort made worse by a very sedentary lifestyle, but also with a great mindset “I’m doing it for me and because I want to be healthy for good.”
Early on, Becky learned the value of consistently tracking food and drink not just for being aware of what she was taking in and to see stress eating patterns in her intake, especially as it related to her mood and the work we were doing to disconnect it from using it as a source of comfort, but also to give food less power. There were times when Becky didn’t track her food and drink because she had slipped a bit. Ultimately she came to realize that she had to own the days where she made excellent choices as much as the days where there was room for improvement. There wasn’t any good or bad, it was just choices. This was an important insight for her success, and she became so good at eating cleanly consistently and balanced, her food tracking would become a model for many other clients to show them it was possible.
Another major change for Becky was learning to get moving, especially on the weekends where physical activity was almost non-existent. Plus, adding in strength training, some higher intensity cardio on an Elliptical and longer walks made a huge difference. Despite having a long commute, she made getting up early as needed to get strength training in and walking the 30 minutes each way from the train back and forth to work a priority. A big moment of pride was when during a 90-minute walk on the weekend with her sister Becky no longer struggled to keep up, it was actually her sister who had to work to keep up with her! She was also proud of being able to go hiking for several miles at a state park this Summer which included plenty of steep inclines.
Becky was especially excited to beat the goal she had of losing 50 pounds by an important birthday this Summer. Achieving this put her just past the halfway point to her ultimate weight loss goal of losing 90 pounds, but armed with the new healthy habits we’ve established together, and will continue to reinforce, she’s already a weight loss success story and there’s no doubt she’ll get there.
