Healthy Halloween Treat Tips

Is it possible to have a healthy Halloween when temptation is everywhere? Yes!

Halloween candy and baked goodies sporting black and orange colors and cute baked goods in the shape of ghosts and pumpkins are on prominent display in stores, and even if you stay out of the store, the newspapers are filled with ads for the same Halloween treats.

Well. believe it or not, you can have a healthy Halloween without feeling deprived! Like every other day of the year, it's all about the choices you make.

Here are 3 healthy Halloween treat tips:

1. Read the Ingredient labels

Avoid anything that has trans fat in it which will show up as "partially hydrogenated oil,” "fractionated oil.” A new way food manufacturers are avoiding trans-fat labeling is by using something referred to as “interesterified oil.” You don’t want this either.

2.  Put Back Any Item That Has More Than 3 Grams of Fat Per Serving

An exception to this rule of thumb, would be if the serving you would actually consume brings the fat content down to 3 grams per serving.  For example, the food manufacturer's label might say "11 grams of fat per serving" but it's for 4 mini candy bars.  If you will only eat one as a serving and be satisfied, you're still good.

Here are some Halloween candies that are low in fat and calories.  Notice that you'll get the lowest fat or even a fat free Halloween candy, and lowest calories, by not choosing chocolate.

  • Candy Corn (some brands have high fructose corn syrup)

  • Mike and Ike

  • Twizzlers Chocolate Licorice

  • Sweet Tarts

  • Lifesavers

  • Marshmallow Peeps

  • Smarties

  • Three Musketeers (fun or mini size)

  • Raisinets (dark chocolate is my favorite)

  • York Peppermint Patties (fun size pumpkins, my personal favorite)

3.  Buy Halloween Goodies That Aren’t Candy

Many of the healthier snack manufacturers have jumped on the Halloween bandwagon and now offer mini portions, packaging and shapes that tie in with the theme.  Some examples are:

  • Pirate’s Booty

  • Pretzels in Halloween shapes (always be sure there is no trans fat, read the label)

  • Clif Z Bars

  • Raisins

  • Annie's Bunnies

The Halloween Takeaway

Use these Halloween treat tips to not feel deprived, and see how creative you can get now that you're armed with the information you need to make better choices.  Watch portion sizes and have one and be done in a day. Your waistline will thank you!
